HSBC plans to close 82 branches in the U.K. this year after a decline in traffic to its retail network and a surge in digital banking. That will leave it with 511 branches in the U.K., many of which will be remodeled and some of which will offer fewer services. The bank has decided to provide fewer full-service branches in major cities, as part of its initial testing of their various formats. HSBC will seek to reallocate staff at closing branches to nearby branches where possible.
