Rio Tinto Group is an Anglo-Australian multinational and the world's second largest metals and mining corporation, behind BHP, producing iron ore, copper, diamonds, gold and uranium. The company was founded in 1873, when a multinational consortium of investors purchased a mine complex on the Rio Tinto, in Huelva, Spain, from the Spanish government. Rio Tinto has joint head offices in London (global and "plc") and Melbourne ("Limited" – Australia).

Rio Tinto has acquired the Rincon lithium project in Argentina for $825 million. The mining operation will use direct lithium extraction technology, which is expected to significantly increase the metal's recovery.

Rio Tinto has made an offer to buy the remaining 49% stake in the Turquoise Hill exploration and development company for $2.7 billion. The offer will be reviewed by a special committee of the Turquoise Hill board and will make recommendations to shareholders.

Rio Tinto has received approval from the Mongolian government to develop the Oyu Tolgoi gold-copper deposit. Now only open-pit mining is taking place there. Now Rio Tinto will mine the underground part of the project. Production will start in the first half of 2023. Oyu Tolgoi is one of the world's largest gold-copper deposits.
