Bayer will pay about $1.6 billion to settle claims in the United States related to its Essure contraceptive spirals. The settlement agreement covers approximately 90 percent of the nearly 39,000 claims from women who claim injuries from these devices. Back in 2018, Bayer said it would phase out Essure sales in the U.S., but the company said the decision was due to lower sales of the implantable device, not based on security concerns.
