Uniper has begun supplying electricity to Japan through the European Energy Exchange. The company notes that electricity consumption in Japan is about 1,020 TWh per year, about twice as much as in Germany, and the demand for imports of all energy products is enormous. Although the country has been slow to open up to global energy trade, the volume of short-term electricity trade has increased 20-fold since 2016, from 50 GWh to more than 1,000 GWh daily.
