Tankers carrying liquefied natural gas from Gazprom's complex at the Portovaya compressor station began deliveries to China in the spring of 2024, bypassing the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. They now follow the west coast of Africa and the Cape of Good Hope. These routes are 1.5 times longer than traditional routes and take 45 days one way. Reason for choosing the longer route was the risk of losing ships due to attacks by Yemen's Ansar Allah movement in the Red Sea.
