Novatek and Rosatom will start icebreaker escorting LNG tankers along the eastern sector of the Northern Sea Route in February, allowing them to take advantage of the sharp surge in spot prices in Asia, which are four times higher than in Europe. Novatek has already sent two test cargoes along this route without icebreaker escort: the tanker Christophe de Margerie left Sabetta on January 5 on the Yamal Peninsula, followed by the Nikolay Evgenov on the 6th. In 2020, about 2.54 million tons of liquefied gas were shipped eastward from Novatek's Yamal LNG project via the NSR, compared to 1.2 million tons in 2019. In 2021, the company planned to maintain deliveries at the level of 2020.
