Rio Tinto will build a scandium oxide plant in Canada at the Rio Tinto Fer et Titane metallurgical complex in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec. The company is investing $6 million to build the first module with an initial production capacity of 3 tons of scandium oxide per year, which represents about 20% of the global market. Another $650,000 will be provided by the Quebec government. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in Q2 2021. Scandium oxide is used to produce high-performance aluminum alloys and 3D printing, as well as to improve the performance of solid oxide fuel cells, which are used as a power source for data centers and hospitals.
